Abi Clarke
In the past
i.e. in the beginning of 2020, comedians may have expected to spend the next
few years touring across the UK as stand-ups before being invited onto a
television panel show and selling tickets to an arena tour. It's not so easy.
Comedy is one form of art that has been able to continue to be performed in
front of an audience of live. However, we won't have arena tours any time in
the near future. But, one Bristol comedian has a huge following by utilizing
the social media lockdown. Abi Clarke never set out to become a global internet
star. The 24-year-old, who lives in Hen bury, with her parents, first started
making online videos "to build a following of people who be interested in
my stand-up comic. "I performed a variety of shows in the depths of Devon
to guys in their 50s who weren't quite so hot on my Love Island, Sims and
Twilight references. I then went online with the intention of finding other
young women who really related to me." Abi has since performed at Lakota Gardens
as restrictions on lockdowns have eased however she is still posting her videos
on Instagram, Twitter and Tik Tok (where she recently reached 500k followers)
Finding ideas from sources as diverse as her job at a cafe, a conversation with
a stranger, or the girls' group chat. She also writes everything down on her
smartphone.
