Ronny Chieng
Ronny Xin Yi
Chieng, born 21 November 1985 in Malaysia, is a comedian and actor. Chieng is
currently a senior correspondent on The Daily Show on Comedy Central and
creator and star of the sitcom Ronny Chieng International Student which debuted
on ABC (Australia) and Comedy Central Asia in 2017. Chieng was born in Johor
Bahru, Malaysia, to a Malaysian Chinese family. Chieng was brought up in
Singapore and in the United States. He lived in Manchester, New Hampshire,
between 1989 and 1994. Chieng performed alongside Trevor Noah in 2013 at the
Comedy Festival in Melbourne, Australia. A few years later Chieng was asked to
audition for the role of correspondent on The Daily Show, which Noah hosts. He
was named one of the 10 most watched comics in Variety's July 2016 issue. In
October of 2016, Chieng joined The Daily Show to discuss the controversial
Jesse Watters Fox News segment which was widely believed to be racist. Chieng
is known for his expletive-laden criticism of the show on the network that is
conservative. Chieng also visited New york City's Chinatown in which Watters
had made fun of residents. The viral video garnered attention in Slate and the
Washington Post. In his young years, Chieng was an Singapore Sea Scout. He has
not been able to acquire citizenship or permanent residency status in Australia
despite living in Australia for ten years. In the year 2018, Chieng claimed he
was an apologist during the Daily Show and later stated in an interview that he
was "100 per cent not scared of dogs".
